Joe Charboneau Marquee

Joe Charboneau hit .289 with 23 home runs for Cleveland in 1980, won American League Rookie of the Year, and became briefly one of the most famous men in Ohio — a local band recorded a song about him, and stories circulated about him opening beer bottles with his eye socket and cutting out his own tattoo.

He hurt his back sliding headfirst the following spring, and that was effectively the end. He played 48 games in 1981 and 22 in 1982, hitting .214 across them, and never appeared in the majors again after June of that year.

Born in Belvidere, Illinois in 1955, Charboneau finished with 29 home runs and 172 hits across 201 games, all for Cleveland. Few rookie awards have been followed by so short a fall.
