He won the Gold Glove every year from 1976 to 1981 and caught 1,927 games in sixteen seasons, most of them for Texas clubs that finished second or worse. He threw out runners at a rate nobody in his league matched and called games for pitchers who said so afterward, at length.

In the seventh game of the 1985 Championship Series he hit a bases-clearing triple that broke it open, and Kansas City went on to win the World Series from three games down. He was thirty-four and had been traded twice in fourteen months to get there.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,493 hits, 624 runs batted in, 699 walks and a .248 average, with three All-Star selections. He has broadcast and worked in the Rangers' front office since. The 1995 ballot gave him one vote of 460.
