Jesse Haines Marquee Hall of Fame 1970

b. July 22, 1893 · Cincinnati Reds 1918, St. Louis Cardinals 1920–1937

Cincinnati used him in one game in July 1918 and let him go. St. Louis bought him for 1920, when he was twenty-six, and he was still pitching for the club in 1937. Eighteen seasons in a Cardinals uniform is a tenure only Adam Wainwright has matched.

On July 17, 1924, he no-hit the Boston Braves 5-0 at home. His best year was 1927: 24-10, 25 complete games, and six shutouts to lead the National League, which he had also led in 1921. He finished 210-158 with 208 complete games and a 3.64 earned run average.

He threw a hard knuckleball, and it kept him working until he was forty-four. The writers never gave him serious support. The Veterans Committee elected him instead, thirty-three years after his last game, and that choice is still argued about as freely as any in the Hall.
