Jay Buhner Marquee

Jay Buhner was a Yankee for parts of two seasons before New York traded him to Seattle in 1988 for Ken Phelps. The deal became shorthand for organizational impatience, aided considerably by a Seinfeld episode built around it.

In Seattle he became exactly what the Yankees had been waiting for: three consecutive seasons of 40 or more home runs from 1995 to 1997, a Gold Glove in 1996, an All-Star selection the same year, and a throwing arm from right field that runners learned to respect.

Born in Louisville in 1964, Buhner spent fourteen years with the Mariners and finished with 310 home runs, 965 runs batted in and 792 walks.
