Born June 23, 1895
Chicago, IL, USA
Jack Smith played center field for the St. Louis Cardinals for twelve seasons and was there for the 1926 team that won the franchise's first World Series, having been part of the long climb out of the second division that preceded it.
He was among the better basestealers of the 1920s, taking 228 across his career at a time when the running game was going out of fashion, and he scored 783 runs while batting .287.
Born in Chicago in 1895, Smith collected 1,301 hits across 1,406 games and finished with the Boston Braves in 1929. He drew 334 walks and hit 40 home runs, modest power for an era that was beginning to reward it. He was seventy-six at his death, in May 1972.
