Hooks Dauss

Hooks Dauss Marquee

b. September 22, 1889 · Detroit Tigers 1912–1926

Fifteen seasons, all of them in Detroit, gave him 222 wins against 182 with a 3.30 earned run average across 3,390 innings and 245 complete games. Nobody has won more games for the franchise — George Mullin has 209 and Mickey Lolich 207 — and the record has stood since 1926.

He won 24 games in 1915 and 21 in both 1919 and 1923. The club finished second in 1915 and second again in 1923 and never first in any of his years, so he pitched fifteen seasons for one of the better organizations in the league and never appeared in a postseason game.

The nickname came from the curveball. A heart condition ended him at thirty-six and he lived another thirty-seven years in Michigan. He has never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot of any kind, which for the winningest pitcher a charter franchise has had is its own sort of record.
