Hal Schumacher Marquee

b. November 23, 1910 · New York Giants 1931–1942, 1946

He went 19-12 with a 2.16 earned run average in 1933 and 23-10 the following season, pitching behind Carl Hubbell for John McGraw's successor Bill Terry. New York won the 1933 World Series and he started and won a game in it, and lost the 1936 and 1937 Series to the Yankees.

Thirteen seasons, all with the Giants, gave him 158 wins against 121, a 3.36 earned run average, 2,482 innings, 138 complete games and 27 shutouts. He was called Prince Hal and was chosen for two All-Star teams.

He signed out of St. Lawrence University without a day in the minor leagues, served three years in the Navy in the Second World War, and came back for one more season at thirty-five. He ran a sporting-goods company in Ohio afterward. Seven writers' ballots gave him no more than eleven votes. He died in 1993, at eighty-two.
