Hal McRae

Hal McRae Marquee

b. July 10, 1945 · Cincinnati Reds 1968, 1970–1972, Kansas City Royals 1973–1987

He led the American League with 133 runs batted in in 1982 and with 54 doubles in 1977 and 46 in 1982, mostly as a designated hitter, and won the award for the best of those three times. Nineteen seasons gave him 2,091 hits, 484 doubles, 1,097 runs batted in and a .290 average.

He slid into second base with the intent of putting the fielder into left field, and after one such slide in the 1977 Championship Series the rule requiring a runner to be able to reach the base was tightened. People still call it the McRae rule.

He came from the Cincinnati organization in 1972 and spent fifteen seasons in Kansas City, winning the 1985 World Series at forty. He managed the Royals afterward, and a press conference in 1993 in which he threw a telephone at the assembled reporters is on film. His son Brian played ten seasons. The 1993 ballot gave him no votes at all.
