In 2017 he hit 59 home runs and drove in 132, led the National League in both, and was its Most Valuable Player. It was the most anyone had hit since 2001, and Aaron Judge's 62 in 2022 and Cal Raleigh's 60 in 2025 have since passed it. Sixteen seasons have given him 453 home runs, 40th on the all-time list, 1,169 runs batted in and a .258 average.

He hits the ball harder than almost anyone the game has measured, and the same swing that produces that produces the strikeouts and the injuries: he has reached 150 games in a season four times in sixteen years. A pitch broke his face in 2014 and he came back wearing a guard on his helmet.

Miami traded him to the Yankees after the 2017 award, in a contract that ran thirteen years. He was the most valuable player of the 2024 American League Championship Series and of the 2022 All-Star Game. He is still playing.
