Fred Hutchinson Marquee

b. August 12, 1919 · Detroit Tigers 1939–1941, 1946–1953

He went 18-10 in 1947 and 17-8 in 1950 for the Tigers and was an All-Star in 1951. Eleven seasons gave him 95 wins against 71, a 3.73 earned run average, 1,464 innings and 81 complete games, all of it in Detroit, with four years in the Navy taken out of the middle of it.

He was a good enough hitter to be used as a pinch hitter, batting .263 lifetime. He became Detroit's player-manager at thirty-two in 1952, then managed St. Louis, then Cincinnati, where the 1961 club won the pennant nobody expected and he was named Manager of the Year.

He was found to have lung cancer in December 1963, managed most of the 1964 season anyway, and died that November at forty-five. His brother Bill, a surgeon, founded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle in his name. Two writers' ballots and two committees have taken him up.
