Louisville put him in the outfield in 1894 and finished ninth or worse in every one of his six seasons there. The club folded, its best players went to Pittsburgh with him, and Pittsburgh won the pennant in 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1909. He was the manager for all four and the left fielder as well.

He hit .312 over twenty-one seasons: 2,678 hits, 1,622 runs, 509 stolen bases, and 220 triples, seventh on the career list. He led the National League in doubles in 1903, triples in 1906, and walks in 1909. Honus Wagner was his teammate from 1897 on, at Louisville first and then Pittsburgh.

His 1903 club lost the first World Series to the Boston Americans. The 1909 club won 110 games and beat Detroit. He stopped playing regularly after 1911 and appeared in twelve games across the next four years. The Old Timers Committee elected him in 1945, the year the writers had him at 53 of 247.
