He saved 55 games in 2003 without blowing one, with a 1.20 earned run average and 137 strikeouts in 82 innings, and won the Cy Young Award with all twenty-eight first-place votes. Between August 2002 and July 2004 he converted eighty-four consecutive save chances, which nobody has come near.

He was a failed starting pitcher — 11-14 in three seasons — before the Dodgers moved him to the bullpen in 2002. The gate at Dodger Stadium played a song and the scoreboard read Game Over when he came in, and for two years it was accurate.

Elbow and back operations ended it quickly; he was finished at thirty-two with 187 saves in ten seasons. He was named in the Mitchell Report in 2007 and acknowledged using human growth hormone. He is Canadian, from Mascouche, Quebec. The 2014 ballot gave him two votes of 571.
