Atlanta traded him to Texas at nineteen in the deal for Mark Teixeira and he was the Rangers' shortstop from the following April, at twenty, for twelve seasons. He stole 30 or more bases five times and finished with 347, and played in the World Series in 2010 and 2011.

Fifteen seasons gave him 2,091 hits, 380 doubles, 102 home runs, 775 runs batted in and a .269 average, with two All-Star selections. He was second in the 2009 Rookie of the Year voting and made 2,059 appearances in the field, almost all at shortstop.

He was Venezuelan, signed at sixteen, and reached 2,000 hits at thirty-four. He is not yet on a Hall of Fame ballot.
