He played all fourteen seasons for New York and leads the club in hits with 1,777, in runs batted in with 970, and in doubles, runs and walks besides. Fourteen seasons gave him 242 home runs, 196 stolen bases and a .296 average, with seven All-Star selections, two Gold Gloves and two Silver Sluggers.

Spinal stenosis was diagnosed in 2015 — a narrowing of the canal around the spinal cord, which does not get better — and he played 38 games that year, 37 the next, and none in 2017. He got into two games in September 2018 so that the thing could end at Citi Field with people watching, and then retired at thirty-five.

He was the captain, the fourth the club has named. His one full postseason was 2015, when the Mets reached the World Series and he hit a home run in the third game, which is the last October anyone saw him healthy. He got 24 votes of 385 in 2024 and 32 of 394 in 2025.
