Colby Lewis was a failed prospect for the Texas Rangers, a first-round pick who had made 195 starts' worth of trouble for himself by 2007. He went to the Hiroshima Toyo Carp for two seasons, learned to command a cutter, and came back in 2010 as the pitcher Texas had drafted him to be.
That first season back brought fourteen wins and two more in the postseason, including the pennant-clinching game against the Yankees, as the Rangers reached the first World Series in franchise history. He started three more postseason games the following autumn.
Born in Bakersfield, California in 1979, Lewis struck out 961 batters across 1,215 innings and finished 77-72, retiring after the 2016 season.
