Clyde Milan Marquee

He stole 88 bases in 1912 and 75 in 1913, the most in the league both years, and the 88 stood as the American League record until Ty Cobb passed it in 1915. He hit .306 that season with 184 hits and finished fourth in the Chalmers Award voting.

Sixteen seasons gave him 2,100 hits, 240 doubles, 105 triples, 1,004 runs, 495 stolen bases and a .285 average, every game of it for Washington. He played center field close enough to the infield that they called him Deerfoot, and he played 1,903 games there.

He and Walter Johnson came up together, roomed together on the road for their whole careers and stayed friends afterward. He managed Washington in 1922, coached there for twenty years, and died of a heart attack during spring training in 1953, at sixty-five, hitting fungoes in Orlando. Eight ballots listed him.
