Chick Hafey

Chick Hafey Marquee Hall of Fame 1971

b. February 12, 1903 · St. Louis Cardinals 1924–1931, Cincinnati Reds 1932–1935, 1937

His four best years came together in St. Louis: 27 home runs and 111 RBI in 1928, then 29 and 125 in 1929, then 26 and 107 in 1930, then 157 hits in 1931. He finished with 1,466 hits, 341 doubles and 164 home runs in 13 seasons, and hit for the cycle against the Phillies on August 21, 1930.

Sinus trouble and bad vision followed him throughout, and he batted in eyeglasses, changing pairs as his sight changed. A salary dispute with the Cardinals ended his time there and he was traded to Cincinnati after the 1931 season. He played no games at all in 1936 and came back for 89 more in 1937 before he was done.

He started in left field for the National League in the first All-Star Game, played at Comiskey Park in 1933, and took the first hit in the history of that game. The writers put him on twelve ballots and never gave him more than 29 votes. The Veterans Committee elected him in 1971, two years before he died.
