He hit five home runs in the 2009 World Series, which only Reggie Jackson had done, and Philadelphia lost it anyway. The club had won the thing the year before, with 33 home runs from him. His best season was 2006: 203 hits, 32 home runs, a league-leading 131 runs, and a 35-game hitting streak through the middle of the summer.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,885 hits, 259 home runs, 1,025 runs batted in, 411 doubles and a .275 average, with six All-Star selections and four Silver Sluggers. He was also hit by 204 pitches, which is the fourth-largest total since 1990. He batted left-handed, stood on top of the plate, and did not move.

In the 2015 Division Series he broke Rubén Tejada's leg with a late slide into second base, and the rule against that kind of slide, passed the following winter, is called the Utley rule. He got 111 votes of 385 on his first ballot in 2024 and 157 of 394 the next year, which is a case still gathering.
