He was 17-9 with a 2.69 earned run average for the 1985 Royals and started two games of the World Series they won. Six years later, pitching in relief for Atlanta in the eleventh inning of the sixth game of the 1991 Series, he gave up Kirby Puckett's home run; the next October, in the sixth game again, he gave up Dave Winfield's double, and Toronto won the title.
Fourteen seasons gave him 140 wins against 119, a 3.71 earned run average, 2,308 innings and 52 complete games. He won 15 or more games four times and pitched in four World Series across two clubs.
Cincinnati gave up on him at twenty-six and Kansas City got him for a minor-league pitcher, which is where the career actually starts. The 1999 ballot gave him no votes at all.
