He won 216 games and lost 216, which is as even as a long career gets, across twenty-five seasons and 3,801 innings with a 3.75 earned run average. Almost all of it was the knuckleball: he learned it in the minor leagues after hurting his arm, and it kept him pitching until he was forty-six.

He was a reliever for eleven years with the Dodgers, appearing in 77 games in 1976, and did not become a starter until Texas made him one in 1982, at thirty-four. He then started 440 games. Ten of his thirteen shutouts and all but a handful of his 107 complete games came after that switch.

He threw the first pitch in Florida Marlins history in 1993, at forty-five, having been signed as much for that as for the innings. One All-Star selection in twenty-five years. The writers gave him four votes of 499 in 2000.
