He went 18-11 with a 3.60 earned run average and ten complete games for the 1970 Expos, a club in its second season that lost 89 games, and took the Rookie of the Year award with 11 of the 24 votes. The following year he went 10-18 for the same club.
Atlanta traded for him after 1972 and got three good years: 15-10, 16-12 and 17-16, with 28 complete games across them. Eight seasons gave him 87 wins against 92, a 3.73 earned run average, 1,648 innings, 51 complete games and 13 shutouts.
He was out of the major leagues at thirty-two. On April 12, 1983, he collapsed of a heart attack in his parents' driveway in Tulsa after a morning run. He was thirty-nine. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
