San Francisco made him the regular catcher in 2010, and he won Rookie of the Year while the Giants won the World Series. In 2012 he batted .336 with 178 hits, 24 home runs and 103 runs batted in, took the Most Valuable Player award and Comeback Player of the Year, and the Giants won again.

The comeback was from a collision at home plate in May 2011 that broke his leg and left him with 41 games caught that season. Baseball wrote a rule against those collisions for 2014, and it still carries his name. San Francisco won a third World Series that October.

He finished with 1,500 hits, 158 home runs and 729 runs batted in, 1,093 games at catcher and 229 at first base, seven All-Star selections, five Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove in 2016. He sat out 2020 after adopting premature twins, played one more season, and retired at 34. No Hall of Fame ballot has carried his name yet.
