Buddy Lewis Marquee

He was Washington's regular third baseman at nineteen, had 175 hits at twenty and 210 at twenty-one, and led the American League with 16 triples in 1939. Through 1941 he had 1,108 hits and had been an All-Star twice, and he was twenty-five years old.

He enlisted after the 1941 season and flew C-47 transports over the Himalayas into Burma. He came home in the middle of 1945, played 69 games and hit .333. He gave three and a half seasons to the war and never once complained about the arithmetic.

He played four more years, hit .292 in 1946 with 170 hits, and quit at thirty-two to run the family car dealership in Gastonia, North Carolina. Eleven seasons gave him 1,563 hits, 93 triples and a .297 average, all of it for one club. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2011, at ninety-four.
