He played 220 games in 1968 and 1969, 188 of them at third base, batting .225 with 141 hits and nine home runs. Bad knees ended it at twenty-eight; he had had them operated on repeatedly before he ever reached New York.

He ran Atlanta, then Toronto, then Atlanta again, with a spell as its general manager in between. In the second Atlanta job his club finished first in fourteen of fifteen seasons from 1991; the exception is 1994, when the strike ended the year with the Braves second. The archive credits him 2,497 wins against 1,999 losses, counting only the games he was in the dugout for.

He was ejected constantly, almost always for defending a player, and his teams noticed. The Expansion Era committee elected him in 2014, four years after he stopped. He died in May 2026 at eighty-four.
