Elizabeth, NJ, USA
Bob Hamelin won American League Rookie of the Year in 1994, hitting .282 with 24 home runs and 65 runs batted in over the 101 games the strike left of the season. The shape of what followed made him a standing example of how little a rookie award guarantees: he hit .168 the next year.
Kansas City sent him to the minors, brought him back, and released him after 1996. He had useful seasons as a part-time designated hitter for Detroit and Milwaukee before finishing at thirty.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1967, Hamelin hit 67 home runs and drew 206 walks across 497 games, and later worked as a scout.
