Bid McPhee

Bid McPhee Marquee Hall of Fame 2000

b. November 1, 1859 · Cincinnati Red Stockings 1882–1889, Cincinnati Reds 1890–1899

He played eighteen seasons for Cincinnati and for nobody else, 2,129 games of them at second base, and batted .272 with 2,258 hits, 1,684 runs and 189 triples. He led the American Association in home runs in 1886, with eight, and in triples in 1887. His 568 stolen bases cover only the seasons in which the statistic was kept.

He fielded barehanded until 1896, long after gloves were ordinary, on the reasoning that padding would cost him his feel for the ball. The year he gave in, his errors fell from 34 to 15. His 6,552 putouts at second base are more than any other player has, 26 ahead of Eddie Collins.

His first Cincinnati club won the American Association's first pennant, in 1882, at 55-25. The team moved to the National League in 1890 and he moved with it, finishing where he had started. The Veterans Committee elected him in 2000, a hundred and one years after his last game and fifty-seven years after his death.
