He played all sixteen of his seasons in New York and was the center fielder for four World Series winners between 1996 and 2000. Sixteen seasons gave him 2,336 hits, 287 home runs, 1,257 runs batted in, 1,366 runs, 1,069 walks and a .297 average, with five All-Star selections and four Gold Gloves.

He was the most valuable player of the 1996 Championship Series, the first of the four titles, and holds several of the club's postseason records simply for having played in so many rounds — the format expanded the year before his prime began.

He was Puerto Rican, came up through the Yankees' system, and had trained as a classical guitarist before the baseball took over. He has released jazz albums since retiring, one of which was nominated for a Grammy. The writers gave him 55 votes of 573 in 2012 and 19 the next year, and he came off the ballot.
