B. J. Surhoff Marquee

B. J. Surhoff was the first pick of the 1985 draft, ahead of Will Clark, Barry Larkin and Barry Bonds. He caught for Milwaukee for nine years, then signed with Baltimore in 1996 and spent most of the rest of his career in left field.

The reinvention worked. His best season came in 1999, at thirty-four, when he drove in 107 runs and made his only All-Star team. He went to Atlanta midway through 2000 and returned to the Orioles for three final seasons.

Born in the Bronx in 1964 and raised on Long Island, Surhoff played 2,313 games and finished with 2,326 hits, 188 home runs and 1,153 runs batted in. He was a college star at North Carolina and played for the United States at the 1984 Olympics before turning professional.
