Alan Trammell Marquee Hall of Fame 2018

b. February 21, 1958 · Detroit Tigers 1977–1996

Detroit brought him up in 1977 alongside Lou Whitaker, and they held the middle infield together until Whitaker retired after 1995. Trammell stayed one more year and never wore another uniform. He won four Gold Gloves, was chosen for six All-Star teams, and finished with 2,365 hits, 1,003 runs batted in and 236 stolen bases.

The 1984 Tigers went 104-58 and won the World Series, and Trammell was named its most valuable player. His own best season came three years later: 205 hits, 28 home runs, 105 runs batted in, 109 runs and a .343 average, with Detroit taking the division. The writers gave the Most Valuable Player award to somebody else.

The writers looked at him on fifteen ballots, beginning in 2002, and never gave him more than 40.9 percent, his 2016 showing of 180 votes out of 440. The Modern Baseball Era committee elected him in 2018 with thirteen of sixteen votes, twenty-two years after his last game.
