The First Modern World Series Game

On October 1, 1903, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Americans 7–3 at Huntington Avenue Grounds in the first game of the first modern World Series, a best-of-nine series pitting the champion of the established National League against the champion of the upstart American League for the first time.

Boston starter Cy Young, fresh off his perfect game earlier that same season, was roughed up for seven runs. Pittsburgh's Deacon Phillippe scattered six hits for the win.

Boston recovered to win the series five games to three, making the Americans, forerunners of the modern Red Sox, the first champions of the World Series.
