Rollie Fingers Becomes the First 300-Save Closer

On April 21, 1982, Milwaukee Brewers closer Rollie Fingers recorded his 300th career save in a 3–1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, becoming the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach the milestone.

Fingers, instantly recognizable for his handlebar mustache, had built his reputation as the game's premier reliever with the Oakland Athletics' dynasty of the early 1970s, closing out three straight World Series championships from 1972 to 1974 and winning World Series MVP in 1974.

Fingers had won the American League Cy Young Award and MVP the previous season, 1981, one of the only relievers ever to win either award outright. He retired in 1985 with 341 career saves, then the record, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992.
