Nap Lajoie's 3,000th Hit

Three months after Honus Wagner got there, Nap Lajoie reached 3,000 hits of his own. On September 27, 1914, he doubled twice in three at-bats against the New York Yankees, and the first of those two doubles was the milestone. Cleveland won 5–3.

The team he was playing for had been named after him. Cleveland's club was called the Naps through most of his tenure, a tribute to the second baseman who had won the Triple Crown in 1901 and hit .338 across twenty-one seasons. The name reverted to the Indians after he left in 1914.

Lajoie's final ledger reads 3,243 hits, 657 doubles and 1,504 runs. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937, a year after the inaugural class.
