Dave Winfield's 3,000th Hit

At forty-one, Dave Winfield singled twice in five at-bats against Oakland on September 16, 1993, drove in a run and scored one. The second single made him the nineteenth player to reach 3,000 hits. Minnesota won 5–4.

Winfield had come up with San Diego in 1973 without playing a game in the minor leagues, spent the 1980s in New York, and reached the milestone in his home state with the Twins. The previous autumn, with Toronto, he had doubled home the winning runs in the eleventh inning of the deciding World Series game.

He was a seven-time Gold Glove outfielder who finished in 1995 with 3,110 hits and 465 home runs. The Hall of Fame elected him in 2001.
