Warren Giles Marquee Hall of Fame 1979

Warren Giles ran Cincinnati's front office from 1937 and later served eighteen years as National League president. Born in May 1896 and dead in February 1979, he was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in the year of his death.

He became National League president in 1951, in a vote that deadlocked for days between him and Ford Frick, and the compromise was that Frick went to the commissioner's office and Giles took the league. He held it until 1969.

The National League's expansion to Houston and New York in 1962, and to Montreal and San Diego in 1969, happened on his watch, as did the moves of the Dodgers and Giants to California. He was the father of Bill Giles, who later ran the Phillies.
