He hit .250 with 113 hits for the 1988 Athletics, who won 104 games and the pennant, and took the award with 103 points of 140 and 17 first-place votes, beating out Bryan Harvey. He was the club's shortstop for the pennant winners of 1988, 1989 and 1990, winning the World Series in 1989.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,207 hits, 182 doubles, 386 runs batted in, 658 walks and a .258 average, with 1,462 games at shortstop for four clubs. He hit .282 with 146 hits and 80 walks for Colorado in 1996, his best offensive season.

He managed the Rockies from 2013 to 2016 after his playing career, going 283-365, and later coached for the Braves. The 2006 ballot gave him one vote of 520.
