He saved 36 games with a 2.08 earned run average in 74 appearances in 1986 and was Rookie of the Year, having pitched in the World Series the previous October without using up his eligibility. He saved 256 in eleven seasons and led the National League twice, the second time with 44 for the Dodgers in 1996, a decade later.
The decade in between is mostly missing: elbow reconstruction cost him all of 1990 and all of 1991, at thirty and thirty-one, which are the years a relief pitcher is usually best. He came back and gave Los Angeles five seasons.
He was six foot five and threw hard and had been a starting pitcher in the minor leagues until St. Louis moved him in 1985. His brother Tim pitched fourteen seasons. The 2003 ballot gave him no votes.
