Steve Yeager Marquee

In July 1976, waiting to bat, he was struck in the neck by the shattered barrel of a teammate's broken bat and needed emergency surgery; the piece missed his jugular vein by a fraction of an inch. He came back that season and worked with Dodger trainers to design the hanging throat guard that hangs from catchers' masks today.

He shared the 1981 World Series Most Valuable Player award with Ron Cey and Pedro Guerrero for the club that beat the Yankees. Fifteen seasons gave him 816 hits, 118 doubles, 102 home runs, 410 runs batted in and a .228 average, all but one of them for Los Angeles.

He caught for the Dodgers for fourteen seasons, through four pennants and two championships, and finished with Seattle in 1986. The 1992 ballot gave him two votes of 430.
