Sammy Hughes batted .316 over 412 games on the record we hold, with 484 hits and 235 runs batted in. He scored 325 runs and stole 21 bases, a genuinely productive line for a middle infielder of any era.

He also pitched briefly, without much success, allowing enough runs across less than two innings for a 5.40 earned run average, a small footnote next to his everyday work at second base.

He was chosen for six All-Star teams, from 1934 through 1940, batting and throwing right-handed throughout that run.
