Sal Bando played third base for the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics for eleven seasons, helping the club to three straight World Series titles, before finishing his career with five years in Milwaukee, retiring in 1981.
He batted .254 with 1,790 hits over 2,019 games, hitting 242 home runs and driving in 1,039 runs, with 1,031 walks showing real patience alongside the power. He also pitched once, in relief, allowing enough runs for a 6.00 earned run average over three innings.
He was a Sporting News All-Star twice, in 1973 and 1974, the same two seasons that anchor his four All-Star selections spanning 1969 to 1974.
Cleveland was his birthplace, on February 13, 1944; he batted and threw right-handed. He lived until January 20, 2023.
