Rafael Furcal played shortstop for the Atlanta Braves for his first six seasons before a free-agent move to the Dodgers in 2006, and later played for St. Louis and Miami, retiring in 2014.
He batted .281 with 1,817 hits over 1,614 games, scoring 1,063 runs and stealing 314 bases, a rookie-of-the-year-caliber talent whose speed defined much of his career.
He took the MLB Players Choice Outstanding Rookie award in 2000, his debut season.
Three All-Star selections came in 2003, 2010 and 2012, seasons spread across three different clubs in a well-traveled career. He was born in Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic, on October 24, 1977, and switch-hit while throwing right-handed.
