Morgan Bulkeley Marquee Hall of Fame 1937

Morgan Bulkeley served as the National League's first president in 1876, gave up the office after one year and never played professionally. Born in December 1837 and dead in November 1922, he was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Centennial Commission in 1937.

He ran the Hartford club and was made the National League's first president in 1876, largely as a figurehead: William Hulbert had organized the league and wanted a New Englander's name on it. Bulkeley did not seek a second term and Hulbert took the office himself the next year.

The rest of his life was politics and insurance. He was mayor of Hartford, governor of Connecticut, a United States senator, and president of Aetna for nearly forty years. His election in 1937 is the one most often cited as the Hall's clearest mistake, and Hulbert was not chosen until 1995.
