José Fernández Marquee

He tried to leave Cuba by boat three times before succeeding at fifteen, once diving into the water to rescue someone who had fallen overboard, not learning until he reached shore that the person was his own mother. Miami drafted him in the first round in 2011 and he went 12-6 with a 2.19 earned run average as a rookie in 2013, taking the Rookie of the Year award unanimously and finishing third in the Cy Young voting.

In 2016 he went 16-8 with a 2.86 earned run average and 253 strikeouts in 182 innings, an All-Star for the second time. Four seasons gave him 38 wins against 17 losses, a 2.58 earned run average and 589 strikeouts in 471 innings — one of the best winning percentages and strikeout rates anyone has posted in a short career.

He died on September 25, 2016, when the boat he was piloting crashed into a jetty off Miami Beach, five days after his final major-league start. He was twenty-four. Miami left his locker untouched and retired his uniform number that winter.
