Joe McCarthy reached the Hall of Fame entirely as a manager after fifteen years as a minor-league infielder without a major-league appearance. That path is unusual company for Cooperstown and helps explain why his managerial record, rather than a playing line, defines the page.

He ran the Cubs, then the Yankees through the Ruth and Gehrig and DiMaggio years, then Boston, and won 2,125 games against 1,333 losses across twenty-four seasons, finishing first nine times. No manager with two thousand wins has won a larger share of his games: .615, against John McGraw's .586.

He was called Marse Joe and ran a famously strict clubhouse: jackets at dinner, no card games, no shaving in the visiting park. He appeared on six Hall of Fame ballots between 1939 and 1958 and the Veterans Committee elected him in 1957, while he was alive, twenty-one years before he died.
