Jim Leyland Marquee Hall of Fame 2024

Jim Leyland managed four major-league clubs across twenty-two seasons after a playing career that never left Detroit's farm system. A catcher there from 1964, he moved into minor-league managing by twenty-six and spent the next eleven years learning the job.

He ran Pittsburgh, Florida, Colorado and Detroit across twenty-two seasons, 1,769 wins against 1,724 losses, which is forty-five games to the good over a whole career, with six first-place finishes. The writers named him Manager of the Year three times. He also managed the United States to the World Baseball Classic title in 2017.

He was a coach under Tony La Russa at Chicago for four years before he got his own club, and the two of them are now both in the Hall of Fame. The Contemporary Baseball Era committee for non-players elected him in 2024, ten years after he stopped.
