Jim Gilliam Marquee

b. October 17, 1928 · Baltimore Elite Giants 1946–1948, Brooklyn Dodgers 1953–1957, Los Angeles Dodgers 1958–1966

He played three seasons for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro National League before Brooklyn bought him, and in 1953 he was Rookie of the Year with 125 runs, 100 walks and a league-leading 17 triples, at twenty-four.

Seventeen seasons gave him 2,021 hits, 1,163 runs, 1,102 walks, 219 stolen bases and a .266 average, with two All-Star selections. He played second base, third base and the outfield as needed and appeared in seven World Series, winning four.

He coached for the Dodgers for twelve years after he stopped playing. He had a brain hemorrhage in September 1978 and died on October 8, two days before the World Series began; Los Angeles wore his number 19 on their sleeves through it and retired the number, which the club has otherwise reserved for Hall of Famers.
