George Weiss Marquee Hall of Fame 1971

George Weiss built the Yankees' minor-league system and later became the first general manager of the New York Mets. Born in June 1894 and dead in August 1972, he was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1971.

He ran a semi-professional club in New Haven while still in his twenties, profitably enough to be noticed, and Ed Barrow hired him in 1932 to build the Yankees' minor-league organization. Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford came through it. He became general manager in 1948.

The club dismissed him in 1960 along with Casey Stengel, both on grounds of age. He took the New York Mets job at sixty-seven and hired Stengel to manage them, which is how the two of them ended their careers with the worst team in the game's modern history rather than the best.
