Born April 8, 1986
Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela
In 2010 he won the Cy Young Award having gone 13-12, which had not happened before: the voters looked past the win total to the innings, the earned run average and the club behind him, and the award is cited as the moment that stopped mattering. He also threw a perfect game, in August 2012.
Fifteen seasons, all with Seattle, gave him 169 wins against 136, 2,524 strikeouts — 38th all-time — and a 3.42 earned run average across 2,729 innings, with six All-Star selections. He debuted at nineteen and was finished at thirty-three.
He never played a postseason game. Seattle has not reached one since 2001 and he arrived in 2005, which is the whole of the explanation. A section of the ballpark sold seats as the King's Court on days he pitched. The writers gave him 81 votes of 394 in 2025.
