Players called him God, which he disliked and which stuck anyway. He was known for knowing the rulebook better than the managers arguing with him and for saying so without raising his voice. He never played professionally, so the statistical record here has nothing else of him.

He appeared on five Hall of Fame ballots. The Veterans Committee for managers and umpires elected him in 2010, and he was there for it, the second umpire after Jocko Conlan to be chosen in his own lifetime. He died in 2018 at eighty-seven.
