Cal Hubbard Marquee Hall of Fame 1976

He played professional football in the 1920s and 1930s, for the Giants and the Packers, which this archive does not record. He never played major-league baseball at all. What it holds is his umpiring: 868 games behind the plate between April 16, 1936 and September 30, 1951, across sixteen seasons.

The count is a floor rather than a total, since it is only the games he worked at the plate. He was a large man by the standards of either sport, and the accounts of his umpiring turn on that: arguments with him tended not to last.

A shotgun accident on a hunting trip cost him much of the sight in one eye and ended his career on the field in 1951. He supervised American League umpires afterward. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1976, a year before he died.
