Bud Fowler Marquee Hall of Fame 2022

It holds his dates, born March 1858 and died February 1913, and his election in 2022 by the Early Baseball Era committee. There is no career total, no season line, nothing. He played for something like a dozen white minor-league and independent clubs across two decades, in Massachusetts, Ontario, Colorado, Nebraska and elsewhere, and none of it was recorded in a form this archive can hold.

That silence is the fact. The leagues he played in kept records patchily and the ones he was driven out of kept none of him at all; he moved constantly because clubs signed him for his ability and released him under pressure from players and crowds. He organized his own touring clubs when nobody would sign him, the Page Fence Giants among them.

He was born John W. Jackson, the son of a barber, and took the name Fowler from the town he grew up in. He died at fifty-four and was buried in an unmarked grave. The Hall of Fame took 109 years to elect him, and it did so with no statistics to go on.
